There’s a reason I like to refer to it as “a tribe of heathen Amazons upon the river Schuylkill.

When whitewashing in movies gets to the point where you’ve got fucking Johnny Depp playing Tonto and Bundtcake Cumberbund or whatever he’s called playing Khan and the company goes out of its way to hide this fact because it knows there will be a shit-storm over it, it’s pretty disheartening.
One quick note: Johnny Depp went out of his way to play Tonto. Like, he sent the director a picture of himself dressed a Tonto to get the role. He knew he’d be white-washing the role and justified it by saying he might have Cherokee heritage.
On the other side, Benedict Cumberbatch was called by the producers of Star Trek and asked to play the villain. The producers made the casting choice. [I’d cite sources, but the interview I’m looking for has disappeared into the haystack of promo materials for the movie].
Could he has refused? Sure, but there is no guarantee the producers wouldn’t have found another white guy for the role. Besides, it was work in a major motion picture and you’ve have to be a pretty dumb actor to refuse that.
So yeah, some actors are more active participants in Hollywood white-washing than others.

Here’s an interesting surprise I got from my publisher. An editorial assistant contacted me to get some information, specifically:
- A brief 2-3 paragraph book description/summary, approx. 250 words, briefly describing the primary characters and story arc.
- A full 3-6 page book synopsis, no more than 2000 words, describing the main characters, full story arc, and ending.
- Character descriptions of the main characters, including eye/hair color, complexion, build, age, apparel, and scars/tattoos for use by the cover designers, and any sample images.
- Setting description and/or description of significant objects
- A short 50-word author bio.
- Any additional facts or information — author quotes or review blurbs — that could be of interest to the marketing and publicity departments, such as background, connections, and internet presence.
Oh, is that all? Geez. But maybe the “sample images” part is fun?
Oh yes. And, uh… well, here’s Ian:

Bio: “Kara lives in Arizona, where everything outside wants to kill her. She is an extremely prolific writer because of this. She can’t cook, but her husband loves her anyway. They live with a Buffalo Dog, an Evil (Pink) Kitty, and (other pets here).”
I think you can adapt some of that other stuff from things you wrote about Northwest Passage, right?
That might be the best bio I’ve ever read. <3
And that’s a good idea! Time to dig back into the NWP tag. Thank you. :)
Feel free to use it or adapt in for your own nefarious purposes.
